Bellagio, Italy — Traveling through Italy in summer is a visual wonderland. Lakes and seas set against a backdrop of mountains, villages and steeples make it a sensual fantasy—a feast that prepares you for the daily staples of gnocchi, focaccia covered in olive oil and pepper, and red wine.
As typical, I picked up a few books at a local bookshop for the journey. The Dark Heart of Italy by Tobias Jones and First They Took Rome by David Broder. I recommend both, even if they tilt left-ward.
Jones’ critique of Italy was riveting as it covered history, politics, church, economics, and life in general. No wonder his is in its third edition.
